Mosel River

The Mosel is one of the great rivers of the world and it is famous for its twisty winding way through France, Luxembourg and Germany. It was my plan to follow the twists and turns and to check out the vineyards along the way. I stayed 2 nights in Traben-Trarbach, which is the most famous place you have never heard of. It is/was the centre of supply for Mosel wines and it still produces vast quantities that are popular in Europe. Regrettably they have been slowly pushed out of favour in the UK by southern hemisphere wines, and I think they, like many others, don't travel well.

I managed to get my first shot of the river at the road works as we stopped.

The campsite was right at the edge of the river. 

Cycling into Traben was easy! Cycle tracks along rivers tend to be quite level. The view shows the opposite bank where the town is called Trarbach. Notice the ruin on the hill above left.

Novelty transport for the local bijou hotel is a vintage Austin (16?)

I think there is a bit of a drought because the water was almost stationary with no noticeable flow.

My camera was not good enough to show the huge sweep in the bend of the river and I have to show it in 2 parts. View North

View South. The pics are taken from the ruin mentioned earlier, called Grevenburg Castle which was a fortification of some importance until it was blown up finally by the French.

The ruins now house a fine winestube that serves very nice Mosel wines.

This campsite is highly recommended.
